Good
attendance is one of the keys to student success in school. Every Sammamish student is expecte=
d to
maintain excellent attendance. Most
of the experiences that take place in a classroom cannot be duplicated for =
each
student individually. The
discussions and the student-to-student interactions that are a vital part of
each classroom day are not recovered once missed.
At
Sammamish, teachers report attendance during each period throughout the
day. If it is necessary for a
student to be absent, the parent/guardian should call the school Attendance
Office at 425-456-7606 by 8:00 AM.
Upon returning to school following an absence, all students must rep=
ort
to the Attendance Office before the start of the school day.
In
order for an absence to be excused, the following procedures must be follow=
ed:
1. =
Regardless of a prior =
parent
phone call, each student is required to bring a dated note, signed by=
the
parent/guardian, stating the reason for the absence. *Absences will be excused f=
or the
following reasons only:
a. =
Illness/Injury
b. =
Medical appointments (=
may
require a note from the doctor’s office)
c. =
Family Emergency
d. =
Medical Emergency (may
require a note from the doctor)
e. =
Legal Appointments (may
require a note from the legal office)
f. =
Religious Observances
g. =
Sammamish-sponsored
activities
2. =
Not=
es must
be received within 48 hours (2 days) from the last day of the
absence. Notes received after=
2
days will result in the absence being unexcused.
3. =
If a student becomes i=
ll in
the middle of the day, they must check out through the clinic. The school nurse is not here on
Thursdays, but the clinic is always open. Failure to check out through the c=
linic
will result in an unexcused absence.
The school requires parent permission before allowing a student to l=
eave
early.
4. =
Early Dismissals must be arranged ahea=
d of
time with a note from the parent or guardian stating the reason and =
time
the student should be dismissed and whether or not they are expected to ret=
urn
to school that day. Failure to
arrange an early dismissal and check out through the office will result in =
an
unexcused absence.
5. =
Pre-Arranged Absences:=
When you know ahead of time that y=
our
student is going to miss school, the student should:
a. =
Obtain a Pre-Arranged Absence Form from the Attendance Off=
ice.
b. =
Have his/her teachers =
sign
the form indicating the student’s progress in the class.
c. =
Have the form signed by
his/her counselor (and administrator if indicated).
d. =
Have the form signed by
his/her parent/guardian.
e. =
After all signatures h=
ave
been obtained, the form is to be turned into the attendance office BEFOR=
E
the absence occurs. Failure to
pre-arrange an absence or to turn the form in before the absence will resul=
t in
the absence being unexcused.

Activities and Attenda=
nce: Students must attend at least 5 cl=
asses
on 7 period days, 2 classes on 3 period days and 3 classes on 4 period days=
in
order to participate in any school activity.
* Examples of UNEXCUSED absences include, but are not limited to: not adhering to the atten= dance policy, oversleeping, missing the bus, returning home for forgotten items, = car problems, not having a ride to school, driving parents or siblings someplac= e, running errands, taking care of siblings, taking a drive test, etc. Class work missed due to unexcused absences may not be made up.
