English Language Arts classes prepare students to draw upon their literary knowledge and their skills in written and spoken language so that they may communicate with the world around them. The goal is for text to inspire student writing which will lead to further reading, discussion and collaboration. Experiences with a variety of texts, different writing modes and oral communication interconnect to provide students with opportunities to understand themselves and others. Learning English is more than memorizing a set of grammar rules, structures and styles. It is a creative, complex problem–solving activity which requires strong critical thinking, reading, writing and communication skills.

In Bellevue School District students earn three middle school Language Arts credits, four high school English credits and Summer Reading is required at each grade level. The curriculum integrates the study of literature and non-fiction text with the study of composition. Honors courses are offered grades 6-10 and multiple opportunities for rigorous work in Advanced Placement courses or the International Baccalaureate Program are offered in the junior and senior year. Bellevue School District strives for English Language Arts students to develop as independent learners, to succeed in advanced course work, college course work and beyond.
