| In addition to covering the fundamentals of ceramics work such as hand building and wheel throwing, this class explores the dynamic firing processes of Raku and Saggar. Dating back to the 16th century, Raku pots were taken from the kiln at glowing hot temperatures in order to give them a distinct look. Saggar pots, which date to an earlier time period, were vessels fired inside large containers next to organic materials for a different set of distinct effects. In this class students engage in the western evolution of these ancient firing techniques. | |
