The mission of the Bellevue School District secondary mathematics program is the same as the overall District mission:
·
Provide every student in the Bellevue School District with the kind of education typically reserved for America 's elite.
·
Provide a top-of-the-line college preparatory program to all students.
|
Our secondary math program is designed to provide a meaningful experience-based curriculum, which is engaging, challenging, and student centered, to every student, regardless of background. Our program focuses on problem solving, skill development, and mathematical fluency. Our students will become problem solvers who are able to communicate mathematically in oral and written form and apply mathematical concepts and skills in a technology based future.
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the Trends in International Math and Science Study (TIMSS), and Achieve Inc. all place greater emphasis on problem solving, reasoning, representation, connections, and communication. While basic facts are still incredibly important, it is equally important for students to understand concepts rather than merely follow a sequence of procedures. In our classrooms, students are learning to think critically in a mathematical way with an understanding that there are many different ways to a solution and sometimes more than one right answer in applied mathematics. Providing a context for applying mathematical skills and understanding gives meaning to mathematics and demonstrates the level of conceptual development expected.
