Middle School Physical Education – 8th Grade


Tennis:

Tennis is a lifetime sport that is played by more that 22 million Americans. Players range in age from the 8-under group to those over 75 years of age. Most players are amateurs who play the game for enjoyment and physical activity.

Playing tennis can help improve muscular strength and endurance, increase cardiovascular activity, balance, speed and agility.  It also is great for improving eye-hand coordination.

Students will participate in a variety of drills and lead up games to increase their basic tennis skills. The goal for all students is to have the skills and knowledge necessary to play a beginning level game of tennis.

 


Objectives:

1.       Understand the basic rules, terminology and etiquette of tennis.

2.       Demonstrate proper mechanics of grip, ready position, forehand,

     backhand, and serve.

3.       Demonstrate basic strategies for the singles and doubles game.

4.       Demonstrate safety procedures and care and use of equipment.

5.       Demonstrate characteristics of cooperation, sportsmanship and teamwork.

 


Pacing Guide:

It is recommended that the tennis unit be taught in a minimum of ten class sessions.

 


Unit Assessment:

Students will be evaluated with a written and/or skill assessment to determine that the unit objectives have been met.  Students will also be assessed through teacher observation of skills and knowledge of rules during game play.
