"Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent."
- Victor Hugo
Music provides an array of performance classes which meet the district and state 1.0 credit requirement for Fine Arts. Band, Orchestra and Choir are year long performance classes which along with Advanced Piano and Advanced Guitar will enable students to reach Benchmark III in Fine Arts as required by the state. Jazz Choir and Jazz Ensemble are offered as extensions of the Band and Choir classes. Because of limited space, the jazz classes are auditioned groups. Students with or without music experience may choose Beginning Guitar or Piano. Upon completion of the beginning classes, students can take their skills to the next level by enrolling in Advanced Piano or Guitar. (All guitar and piano courses are semester classes.) Students who are considering music as a career choice or who just want to better understand the underpinnings of music are encouraged to enroll in AP Music Theory. This, along with an upper level performance class, prepares students for college entry.
6-12 music in the Bellevue School District is a cumulative study. An aspect making it unique from other subject areas is that our musicians both study and execute in the subject area—sometimes simultaneously. A major chunk of what our students learn is the actual performance of music. It is supported by their study of music history and theory.
