Students will develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Beginning text materials employ pinyin (the phonetic system indicating Chinese pronunciation in the English alphabet) and simplified characters.  Traditional forms of characters are also taught.  Students communicate in Chinese about such topics as greetings, classroom and courtesy expressions, numbers, family and friends, and school subjects.  Class will be conducted in Chinese at least 80% of the time.  Students will take part in various activities such as films, games, songs and projects to enhance their language learning.  They will expand their understanding of culture through study of festivals, philosophy, geography and arts.
