Badminton:
Badminton began about 2,000 years ago. The game was played in ancient Greece, India and China. The name badminton came from the Badminton House in Gloucestershire where the International Badminton Federation was founded. Badminton is the world’s fastest racket sport.
Badminton is a sport that is different from other racket sports. It involves a lightweight racket and a shuttlecock or “birdie” that travels through the air and may not touch the ground. The characteristics of the “Birdie” and the fast pace that comes from continuous volleying makes badminton an exciting game to play.
Playing badminton can help improve muscular strength and endurance, increase cardiovascular activity, balance, speed and agility. It also is great for improving eye-hand coordination.
Students will participate in a variety of drills and lead up games to increase their basic badminton skills. The goal for all students is to have the skills and knowledge necessary to play a beginning level game of badminton.
Objectives:
1. Understand the basic rules, terminology and etiquette of badminton.
2. Demonstrate proper mechanics of grip, ready position, forehand, backhand, and serve.
3. Demonstrate safety procedures and care of equipment.
4. Demonstrate cooperation, sportsmanship and fair play.
Pacing Guide:
It is recommended that the badminton unit be taught in twelve class sessions.
Unit Assessment:
Students will be evaluated with skill assessments to determine that the unit objectives have been met. Students will also be assessed through teacher observation of skills and knowledge of rules during game play.
