Middle School Physical Education – 8th Grade


Pickleball:

Pickleball was invented as a family game in 1965 by then Washington State Congressman, Joel Pritchard.  The name pickleball came from the family dog, Pickle, who used to chase the balls all over the yard. 

 

Playing Pickleball can help improve muscular strength and endurance, increase cardiovascular activity, balance, speed and agility.  It also is great for improving eye-hand coordination.  It is considered a life long activity.

 

Students will participate in a variety of drills and lead up games to increase their basic Pickleball skills. The goal for all students is to have the skills and knowledge necessary to play a beginning level game of tennis.

 


Objectives:

1.       Understand the basic rules, terminology and etiquette of Pickleball.

2.       Demonstrate proper mechanics of grip, ready position, forehand,

     backhand, and serve.

3.       Demonstrate basic strategies for the singles and doubles game.

4.       Demonstrate safety procedures and care and use of equipment.

5.       Demonstrate characteristics of cooperation, sportsmanship and           teamwork.

 


Pacing Guide:

It is recommended that the Pickleball unit be taught in a minimum of ten class sessions.

 


Unit Assessment:

Students will be evaluated with a written and/or skill assessment to determine that the unit objectives have been met.  Students will also be assessed through teacher observation of skills and knowledge of rules during game play.
