Other InfoStudents will take the AP or IB exam in the spring. Those receiving approved scores may receive college credit in 200-level equivalent classes, depending upon the university in which they choose to enroll.

AP/IB French Language is a comprehensive review of the French language through literature, media and linguistic interaction.  Emphasis is place on listening, speaking, reading and writing with an advanced level of proficiency.  This class is conducted in French 100% of the time.  This class serves as a preparation for the AP exam of IB exam in French language.

Course Description:

 

The AP French Language course is a college level course which is intended to hone students’ language skills in a variety of settings and topics.  Students will review vocabulary and grammatical structures learned in previous study of French to ensure a strong foundation in the language.  Students will also learn new structures and vocabulary and will focus on development of communication skills at a highly proficient level.  Ultimately the goal of the AP French Language course is to help students perfect their language skills so that they may communicate more fluently.


Objectives:        

 

Students will be able to…

 

  • Comprehend French which is intended for native speakers in a variety of settings.
  • Produce French which is comprehensible to native speakers in a variety of settings.
  • Demonstrate a strong command of French grammatical structures in order to support effective communication skills.
  • Continue to acquire vocabulary through exposure to authentic materials.
  • Demonstrate a high level of proficiency by writing a variety of compositions and by participating in frequent and varied speaking situations.

 

In addition, students will function in the indicated themes and communication objectives using the following structures:

 

§          Narration and description in the present tense

§          Narration and description in the past tenses

§          Description of surroundings

§          Expression of desire and obligations (use of subjunctive)

§          Narration and description in the future tense

§          Use of relative pronouns

§          Use of indirect discourse

§          Present participle

§          Read the passé simple

§          Si clauses

§          Prepositions and conjunctions

§          Articles and gender of nouns

 


Resources:         Teachers will use a variety of the following genres and titles to prepare students for the AP French Language exam.

§          Poetry (Baudelaire, La Fontaine, Ronsard)

§          Prose (Camus, Maupassant, Flaubert, Sartre, Balzac, Zola)

§          Opera and Theater (Ionesco, Bizet, Molière, Ronstand)

 


Course Assessment:

 

Students will take the AP French Language examination, administered through the College Board.
