This course is the first comprehensive health course taught to students in our school district. It is designed to provide information about a variety of health education topics and present them in a way that will empower students to take positive actions with regard to their personal health. Another goal of this class is to have all students become health literate. This is defined as “the capacity of individuals to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services and the competence to use such information and services in ways which promote health.” It also focuses on many skills and their application to real life. Some of these skills include communication, decision making, goal setting and negotiation.
Students will learn that good health habits can improve the way they look, perform in school and activities, how they interact with others and how they feel about themselves. Themes in this course are:
· acceptance of personal responsibility for lifelong health
· respect for and promotion of the health of others
· an understanding of the process of growth and development
Wellness is essentially a way of living each day that includes choices and decisions based on healthy attitudes and allows students to be their very best.
