Middle School Physical Education – 6th Grade
Volleyball:
Volleyball was created in 1895 when William G. Morgan, a YMCA instructor in Massachusetts, combined components of basketball, baseball, handball and tennis to create what he call “mintonette”. Observers of the game noticed that players were “volleying” the ball back and forth and the name of the game was changed to volleyball. Volleyball is an extremely popular game in the United States which can be played both indoors and outdoors.
Playing volleyball can help improve muscular strength and increase eye-hand coordination.
Students will participate in a variety of drills and lead up games to increase their basic volleyball skills. The goal for all students is to have the skills and knowledge necessary to play a beginning level game of volleyball.
Objectives:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic rules and terminology of the game of volleyball.
2. Demonstrate the proper mechanics for beginning volleyball skills: ready position (athletic stance), underhand serve, forearm pass/bump, and overhand pass/set.
3. Understand a basic rotation pattern for players on the court.
4. Demonstrate safety procedures and care and use of equipment.
5. Demonstrate characteristics of cooperation, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
Pacing Guide:
It is recommended that the volleyball unit be taught in nine class sessions.
Unit Assessment:
Students will be evaluated with a written and/or skill assessment to determine that the unit objectives have been met. Students will also be assessed through teacher observation of skills and knowledge of rules during game play. There is one district required assessment:
- Volleyball Skill Assessment – underhand serve
